Locked comms. Do people on LJ have a right to lock a community and expect the people who are members to respect the privacy of that community?
Yes, in my opinion, they do. I don’t care what they say in a locked comm that I’m not part of. If I don’t like what the comm is about, I just walk away. We’re not talking about bombs or murder sprees here. In the fandom involving Adam Lambert, no one is planning anything horrific or world-ending. No one is doing anything more than gossiping and speculating, which we all do. It’s human nature and it's not evil.
There is a comm in this fandom that exists largely to prey on others for the purpose of entertainment. Their highest goal is to get information from locked comms and post it openly and mock it. Wait, that’s not right. Their highest goal is to stan Adam Lambert’s boyfriend - while he still is Adam Lambert’s boyfriend. Which, hey, fine by me. I don’t care for the guy, but YMMV and I can respect that we have different viewpoints.
The difference between the anonymous comm full of bullies (nanny-comm) and the locked comm is that you can’t hurt an individual over at nanny-comm if they are anonymous. It's not personal. It really doesn’t matter what you say because no one knows who that person is. Whereas if they take something from a locked comm, including the person’s username - that does hurt the person. These usernames have developed identities, even if they are not RL names. The locked comm isn’t hurting anyone; the nanny-comm is.
Look, some of us don’t like Sauli Koskinen. No one is required to like him. This is a FANFIC fandom, at least for me. I like the pairing of Adam and Tommy. I’m OTP. Some of my friends aren’t. No problem. I can be friends with people who like different things. From the start I found Sauli to be uninteresting and unappealing. Then came the bar brawl. That shit surprised me. I didn’t expect that of either of the pair of them. While the details are murky, a relationship that produces a situation like that is simply not sustainable, particularly not for someone in the public eye, as Adam is. I won’t weep when it ends. That said, it’s Adam’s life. I can’t change his mind, nor would I ever try. I’ve never tweeted or in any way sent anything negative to Adam or Sauli, nor would I ever. If Adam wants to see nasty shit about himself on the internet, he won’t get it from me. All he has to do is check out nanny-comm - it’s there for anyone to see. Including the address of his house.
