I had wanted to post this sooner, but my phone refuses to cooperate with the post page, and text entry is a nightmare. I eventually realized I could have typed it up in my text editor app and pasted it in after I was happy with my editing, but...well, the laptop is out again now, so.
Last week I unaccountably received an invitation to schedule my first vaccine appointment. I didn't think I qualified for any of the reasons to go ahead of the final cattle call, but I jumped on it and grabbed an appointment anyway. Belovèd Spousal Unit was somewhat miffed, both because he definitely does have a qualifying condition and was registered weeks sooner than I, but had not received an invitation of his own yet. Happily he did finally get one a few days later, but obviously I was already scheduled by then, and we couldn't do it together.
I was very pleased with how sanely and smoothly the process went at my vaccine clinic. There was a setup to check in and be called via text messaging (provisions were made for people without that ability), so people stayed well-separated in their cars instead of lining up. The flow controllers (technical term, and blazoned on their vests!) were good at their jobs, and I never had more than one or two people lined up in front of me at any step of the process.
The stick itself was - well, I'm a needle-wuss, so I can't say it was actually a pleasure - but just about the least painful jab I've ever had in my life. I'm really happy about that! I guess maybe they've been getting lots of practice this year... ;>
After the stick, there was the obligatory 15 minute wait to be sure you have no life-threatening reactions period. I spent that time happily notifying family and friends that I had been done, and registering with
v-safe as recommended by my invitation email.
I also learned there that you can help disperse the vaccine and reduce the expected arm pain by exercising the deltoid muscle, so we all waved every time someone new came into the room, especially when it was a nurse! That amused me. I hoped I might escape without any associated symptoms since I almost never react to flu shots at all, but I did develop a bit of pain later that night. Ironically, it showed up just after I had made my first v-safe report that I had no symptoms... Clearly, I should have continued working my arm much longer! The pain was more of an interesting knowledge than an annoyance let alone a problem, though, and disappeared after only a day, so all is well.
Anyway, including both the arrive-10-minutes-early and the 15 minute observation parts, I was in and out in just 40 minutes. You just can't ask for better than that! In a miserable contrast, the clinic Belovèd Spousal Unit attended a couple of days later was a fair goat rodeo. There was a ridiculously long line when we arrived shortly before his scheduled time, and as far as I could see, that line was not being managed at all. He didn't actually get his shot until almost two hours later. Simply appalling! I feel really sorry for anyone who had an afternoon appointment there!
