I noticed how he kept his eyes down and avoided looking at any of them directly. I'm thinking that was standard procedure in the event of being surrounded by gorillas?

yes, he kept his eyes down, especially when the silverback male was looking him over. Eye contact is a challenge gesture with a lot of animals, I wouldn't be surprised if it was with gorillas too.
That is so incredible. I wonder what the gorillas were thinking. I wonder why the big silverback was content to sit back while the rest of his family checked the guy out.
