holy. fuck. the new sonic youth record is fantastic. the first three songs absolutely slay; so much so, that it took me about eight listens just to hear the rest. it's a shot to the gut for sure; you lose your breath, only to regroup feeling ten times better than before. sy sound loose, alive and new. crazy that people this old can make music this ( Read more... )

yeah, the new SY kicks, and so, of course, does your article (but we already went through the ejaculatory praise talk with that).

tell me if I'm crazy, but I swear there's a (slight) hint of...softie indie influence on stuff like "Do You Believe in Rapture". I can't really find any other touchstone for it in SY's career. I can also say with a pretty good deal of confidence that, so far, it blows Sonic Nurse away.

this sonic youth album is what happens when people who can and have made music that feels so much more difficult and complicated and go and make something accessible and down to earth. it's why brian eno's glam pop rocks album are some of the best things in the world.
