Sorry about the lack of a follow-up.  Turns out I was "allowed back" and worked through July 25, which turned out to be my last day on the job.  AGAIN he wanted to review what I was doing.  Seems he didn't want to have to give me health insurance - which he PROMISED - and didn't want to pay me the minimum that he promised me.  So, he let me go and

That sounds like a job my wife left a little over a year and a half ago, almost exactly like it. When she left, they replaced her with three people, too. Yeah, totally ridiculous.
