A good tip I learned in my college writing classes was to go to the library or somewhere public (since I assume you're in school, you can do this in a boring class or between classes or at lunch or whatever) and listen to how people talk. Take notes on interesting phrases, conventions, the feel of different types of exhanges, and learn from it. A cheap tape recorder (you can get one at Wal-Mart) can be helpful as well.

Ooh, a tape recorder would be lots of fun. I could run around pretending to be a spy. Hehe.
