i would maybe check out brookline or maybe jamaica plains? i'm not sure...maybe ask scott/tina, because they would certainly know, i'm sure, and they know apt. prices and good listings, especially tina cause she lived in an apt. in brookline and also in allston.
I'm a little nervous about living in JP. It's becoming a nicer place to live, but it's right next to Roxbury, which is a terrible area. And you have to go through Roxbury to get from JP to Boston itself.
I recommend JP, but yes, safety is the principal concern with that neighborhood, but it is also the primary reason JP is as cheap as it is. But still, a number of people from the college and college-grad communities have moved there, so it's not all bad. And there are a number of cool cheap eateries around.
If that doesn't work, Brookline (near Beacon Street, Comm Ave, or Brookline Village) has a few cheap places. Emphasis on the few, but they still exist in that wonderful town.
