I realize none of the 48hr games have gotten too much attention, but can someone give me any feedback on Maze of the Red Mage? It hasn't gotten so much as a rating.
I haven't been able to beat it yet. The difficulty is definitely roguelike. On one of my playthroughs, the first rat I encountered took my brave knight from 100 health down to 47, and I've never dropped the Red Mage lower than 16 health
( ... )
I've beaten it with a few classes. I recommend Wizard and Knight*, whereas Cleric and Oracle aren't nearly as good as they sound. Wizard in particular has an easy time with the Red Mage if you can pick up a Fire Magic or two. I disagree re: class sameness -- this may just be because the source game has extremely sameish classes, but also I find that Thief, Oracle, and Wizard all offer quite different play experiences from the rest.
A general tip: try to explore near the entrance, where enemies tend to be weaker. You get the same amount of experience and same item drops, regardless of the enemy. (You get an item on every even encounter and levels on every 3rd encounter.) I do notice a definite combat advantage when you raise your attack; you should try to have it at +3 unless you plan on fireballing the Red Mage to death.
Thanks for the comments, and good luck beating the game!
* OTOH I'm not sure I've won with Knight since I fixed the bag limit bug, and Knight has a bag limit of 3
