If the dog is really fat, obese even, the vet can write a prescription for food. We chose Waltham's for overweight cats. (They have dog formulas too.)
Ralph went from being close to 30 pounds, to between 15 and 20. He still was a heavy cat, but part of that was genetic.
If you want to go the non-prescription way, try Canidae Platinum for seniors and overweight dogs. Nutro also makes lite formulas in it's 3 brands of dog food, but only get Nutro Natural Choice or Nutro Ultra, DON'T get Nutro Max (it's their lowest quality, no better than Ol' Roy, really.)
