On 101 and exercise

May 17, 2009 13:43

My 101 list end date is in three days. I think I consider it wrapped up at this point; I haven't pursued any of the items on it for some time now, even after several revisions. I was going to do a more in-depth post about what I didn't finish and why (there are generally good reasons), but why bother, really? I'm ready to move on ( Read more... )

5ks are great. I was never really a runner until I did my first one. A good way to get started is:

Although I think I only trained for about four weeks before my first.

Running outside is completely different than running on a treadmill. I REALLY recommend it. A good site to help you plan routes is:

I honestly don't think of running as "working out" anymore. It's just something I do. It's very meditative. You don't have to get yourself to the gym. You just throw on your shoes, stretch, and run out the door. You get to experience the world around you.

I actually do run outside because I kind of hate the treadmill. I started maybe a month and a half ago, and yeah, it was definitely harder than indoor cardio! But I am now jogging for twice the amount of time I was when I started, and I don't even do it that often, so I figure I'm making good progress. I'm hoping to get to the meditative state you're talking about, but right now I'm still focusing on breathing properly and not overworking my knees (which kinda suck) and my leg muscles.

Thanks for the links, especially the Gmaps pedometer. I'm still struggling to find a good route around our neighborhood and have no idea how far I've been running.

I did two 5K's this academic year, one in November and one in February. I do not overly enjoy running and i definitely walked at points but I also pushed myself at a few points. I will likely do one again and maybe even try to push myself to run the entire thing. One was outside and one was inside, and I felt the one outside more challenging but also more rewarding.

Maybe keep a livejournal log of your running progress as you train.

You were actually the person who put the idea in my head. :) You're always welcome to join me!

Aww, thank you for the shower and the bachelorette party already! I know they're going to be great. Your help and enthusiasm are valued beyond measure!

(I keep thinking "one good turn deserves another" and wishing I could do it all again for you, only better!)

:)

Funnily enough, I was emailing Ania and Erin about the bachelorette party when you commented. Ania emailed me a couple ideas over the weekend, and I think we've got a rough itinerary. It's going to be so awesome. :)

+ Major kudos for working towards the 5K! You're the voice in my head now that prompts me to get my butt outside in the evening after dinner even if it's to just walk. And it's not just because exercise is something we all know we should be doing... it's that you've got something challenging and rewarding and are sticking with it. Your kind of inspiring work ethic will help me get through grad school next year too.
