You're absolutely right to call me out for fixating on his opinion when I 1) made contact with Anna, who's great, and 2) several other people came up to ask me about memes and stuff. I think it's just because when I get the word trivial thrown at me I want to throw something back.
And yes. We don't need Prof. Eagleton. Even if he won't support me today, i've lost nothing from yesterday.
I would agree about the attention thing, but there are lots of people who feel joy from just getting their stuff out there. People who post fic to a friendslocked journal, people who just troll like me, we must get our hit from the reciprocity of other people being into the same stuff as us.
This is so interesting. I never think about currency in fandom, but I suspect it must be intrinsically linked with status (as is money, after all; perhaps that's a defining characteristic of currency?). Is there a link between excitement or attention and status? Are there different kinds of excitement/attention, some more currency-like than others? Um?
(I feel weird commenting on this, because I'm so far removed from academic thought and I've never done any post-grad stuff. But, y'know. *jumps in anyway* :-)
