If there's a way to rescue the company from any kind of Putin-supported deathgrip, I'll be glad to learn of it. So will a lot of other LJ users across the planet.
It seems that, as per its Wikipedia entry, LJ has been owned by a Russian company since 2007. I didn't know that!
I can confirm that the post referenced above contains a technically correct way of figuring out where a server is in the physical world. You can hide from such scans with fake addresses and blinds but I can't think of any reason for someone to do so in this case.
