It was early morning when Tohru got out of bed and prepared herself for a new day. She routinely greeted her mother’s photograph before changing into something presentable and heading down to prepare breakfast.

Upon reaching the bottom step, she was greeted by the sounds of rustling clothes and the cut-off of air as a leg or an arm swept past. She turned her head to see that Kyou was already up, going about his morning training. No one else was awake at that early hour what with Yuki being bad with mornings and Shigure with his erratic sleeping patterns, so it wasn’t uncommon to find that he would be the only other member of the household out of bed.

Tohru had gotten used to having only his company at this time of the day even if there were no real words exchanged. She would simply watch him from the porch adjacent to the dining area or, during the colder seasons, by the kotatsu.

The girl was unfamiliar with the martial arts moves Kyou would perform but the gracefulness of each execution of each move still amazed her. Compared to Yuki’s - whom she hasn’t seen practice in a while - Kyou’s moves held much more determination in them, as if he were reaching for something invisible with every strike despite not having an actual opponent before him. It was simply mesmerizing.

Kyou remained oblivious to Tohru’s presence, his concentration absolute. He continued with his kata, gliding his arms and legs into various positions. After a few repeated motions he paused, catching his breath which came out deep and heavy. He turned his head ever so slightly, ready to start with another routine when he noticed Tohru standing at the edge of the porch.

Tohru didn’t pull her gaze away from the boy, simply observing the rise and fall of his shoulders as he stopped for a rest. She then noticed that he had stopped, straightening up from his stance. When she realized that she had been caught staring, her cheeks heated up a light shade of pink. Nevertheless, she simply smiled and waved at him.

He returned the gesture before grabbing his towel from a nearby bush, wiping off his sweat and approaching the porch.

“Good morning, Kyou-kun!”

“‘Morning.”

They both paused realizing that they had greeted each other at the same time. Tohru broke the silence with a low chuckle. Kyou merely smiled a small smile back at her.

“Would you like a glass of milk, Kyou-kun? I’m sure that your training was exhausting.” She knew he’d say yes even before he answered. It was a habit of his, which she had noticed after their countless exchanges in the morning. Tohru gasped upon realizing what she had said. She frantically waved her hands before her as if trying to dismiss the thought. “Oh, but I didn’t mean to impose. Maybe you want something else or…”

Kyou grunted a little, still trying to catch his breath. He grabbed on to his shoulder, and began rotating it on its socket, before doing a few stretches trying to cool down. “Nah, I’m okay.”

She wasn’t sure why but Tohru felt a little disappointed at his reply. “Oh, all right.” She cast her eyes downward, not meeting his own.

“Let me help you with breakfast though.”

Tohru immediately turned to face him, surprised at his offer. He would sometimes help out but even then it still startled her whenever he did. “Oh, but you must be tired.” She tried reasoning with him, not wanting to Kyou to burden himself. “You shouldn’t overexert yourself.”

Kyou got on the stone step and onto the porch, immediately towering over the girl. He looked down and laid a hand on her head, gently ruffling her hair. “It’s okay. Just get started already. I’ll take a quick shower.” He allowed his hand to rest on her head a little longer.

She nodded, a light blush forming on her cheeks.

Without another word Kyou headed down the hall.

Tohru kept her eyes trained on his back until he disappeared around the corner, continuing to stare before realizing what she was doing. She felt her cheeks flare up as she brought a hand to touch her face.

It had only occurred to her that she did enjoy watching him, not only when training but during his other activities as well. It was an embarrassing thought and she couldn’t help but wonder what Kyou might’ve thought if he had known or noticed beforehand. She wasn’t sure if she was being self-indulgent, allowing herself to that habit. But perhaps it wasn’t a bad thing - perhaps she wasn’t the only one feeling this way.

She looked up at the sky. “Mom, is this how you felt? How you felt around Dad?” Tohru did not expect an answer from the heavens but helped to say it out loud. The sun peeked out from behind a passing cloud as she looked back down, locking her fingers together. A smile tugged on her lips. And as she walked back into the house and to the kitchen, she couldn’t help but think that she already couldn’t wait to see him again.
