the blue in the pictures is the sea of japan. the people who told us about the hillside paddies seemed really proud of the setup. the proximity to the shore is pretty amazing (we cleaned off our feet in the sea after planting the rice) and is probably a result of the general lack of rice-cultivating space in the area.
what i don't understand (and am clearly too lazy to look up) is, where and when are the little stalks of rice grown prior to being placed in the flooded fields?
If I remember correctly, they'll grow the seed in this small corner of the field. (app. 1x1m, usually.) Cover it from the sun to fasten the growth, until they're ready to be replanted to the rest of a field.
I know Japan has problem with not having enough land, but I guess I never imagine they'd use every piece of fertile land, literally! I think it's cool tho, how you can clean off your feet with the sea water. Kind of practical, I must say. :) Must be fun.. It's been a long time since I saw rice paddies. *sigh*
