Fic Recs: Pleased to Meta You!

May 15, 2017 11:35

Who needs that fourth wall, anyway?

Yup, you guessed it, today rec list consists of fics that break the normal barriers of fiction. Some are funny, some are serious... some are just really really weird. But they're all are fabulous in their own way!

Pleased to Meta You!

1. Where Did All The Physics Go? by Amireal - Stargate: Atlantis/Star Trek: TOS fandoms, slash, John/Rodney pairing, crossover, humour
"But that's just not possible!"

Also known fondly as the Crack Crossover of DOOOM! *eg*

Due to the usual complex series of scientific events, somehow John Sheppard and Rodney McKay wind up aboard the Federation starship Enterprise. Only, Star Trek is a TV show... even for them! So many things to adore about this utterly hilarious fic - Sheppard is a secret Trekkie, the strong friendship between Kirk-Spock-McCoy, Science! and Rodney freaking out over the breaking of the laws of physics all over the place. Hilarious!

2. Gene Therapy by Lady Ra - Stargate: Atlantis/Smallville fandoms, slash, John/Rodney & Clark/Lex pairings, crossover, NC17
An energy force hits a puddle jumper and Sheppard's team ends up someplace very unexpected.

This time it's more John's fault than Science!, but the SGA team still wind up in a universe where the supposed fictional is real. One of my favourite bits about this fic is how Rodney totally scoffs at the idea of the Prime Directive and starts sharing tech and info all over the place. Yes! I would too! I mean, why wouldn't you share the advanced knowledge you have in that scenario? Paradox, schmaradox!

Also has a sequel, in which it turns out having someone of Lex Luthor's intelligence and wealth on your side rather offsets any potential for future fictional evilness. Duh!

3. Veritas by ShaneT. - Lois & Clark fandom, het, Clark/Lois pairing
An alternate Clark Kent finds himself flying a planeload of passengers from 1993 Metropolis into real world post-9/11 2008 Washington DC. How will he deal with this new, darker world?

And now for a story in which the so-called 'fictional' character crosses into the 'real world'... Clark Kent mysteriously finds himself in a world where Superman is a comic-book character.

I love this fic because it's honest about the world we chose to allow to become, a discourse on society that makes things scary in retrospect. Do you remember what the world was like pre-9/11? When travel was easier, people felt safer, and the government wasn't quite such a looming shadow over everything? This fic explores our reality and acceptance of fear from the perspective of a Superman unfamiliar with the darker reality of life during the War on Terror.

4. Social Mediæ by Hope - Merlin fandom, gen, crack
With the beginning of Arthur’s reign and the unbanning of sorcery, a new era of communication begins in Albion. Soon even parchment will be obsolete!

OMG, the puns! Scryping, tweeters, lolling cats, etc... but nothing, absolutely nothing, beats out the EweTube joke. XD

5. The Defender by Matthew - Stargate: SG-1 fandom, gen, crack, surprise crossover!
What if the Lost City that SG1 found at the end of season 7 had held something entirely different?

This is an oldie but goodie. Short and sweet, half the fun of the fic is the Jack's reaction to the ridiculous situation SG-1 finds itself in. I won't give away the crossover because that would ruin the surprise, but it ought to be easy enough to figure out if you were alive in the 80s. Like I said, an oldie but goodie!

And one I've recc'ed before but just cannot help but recommend again and again...

Bonus Fic Rec: The Holy Scripture of Fanfiction Meta

6.The Chuck Writes Story: An Unauthorized Fandom Biography (Table of Contents) by lettered - Supernatural fandom, gen
Chuck decides to make a sock-puppet. When no one reads his fic, he wonders what he has to do to get noticed in SPN fandom. You might be wondering why Chuck-Carver Edlund himself-was writing fanfic of his own series in SPN fandom on LJ. This is that story, and the wank that followed.

It is the ultimate meta fic of all time! Yes, I know there are lots of fics out there in which fandom and fanfiction are a thing even in the fictional world, but usually the authors stick to the fictional world when doing that. Normally, I prefer it that way because I can get weirded out in a bad way when things get too close to home. This fic just crashes through any and all Fourth Wall barriers and yet the result is pure awe with no eww to ruin it. I fully credit the brilliant author for managing the impossible by making this mind-breakingly good.

Also, it pulls in Fandom_Wank and has lots of supporting links! Multimedia awesomeness!
