In a word: empowerment.

The Catholic church has for centuries treated women as second class citizens, only fit to be a whore or a nun. Witchcraft offers people a chance to take control of their lives and the world around them (or so it is perceived, the reality may not be so for some), and of course girls raised to believe they HAVE no rights and no control (ok, that's a bit exaggerrated in this day and age, but as I have a female friend who is a devout catholic and was raised that way, in Birmingham and now lives in Ireland and is a lay sister in a convent) will want to take the chance of changing things. With a dinosaur like the Pope in charge, they can never do it from within the church, so they look outside. The Protestant church is a watered down version of the same, Islam is seen as too extreme, Buddhism is too self-sacrificing, so why not witchcraft?

Maybe they're looking for a spirituality that isn't about bowing to a Roman Emperor and delivering blocks of voters?

I was reading the other day, a most fascinating bit, about Bonifazio Bembo and his relationship with the Visconti family. Interestingly enough, one of the younger Visconti girls took vows with an order of nuns who held a prophetic (or so they felt) belief that the line of male popes would give way to a line of matriarchs. This Visconti girl was actually chosen to be the first female Pope. Of course the Inquisition did its thing and the order was collectively tried and convicted of heresy with the expected results, but this might be one source for Bembo's Papessa in the Savoy and Sforza decks, as well as having some input into the legend of Pope Joan.

Interesting, what what?
