USAir charges for your second checked bag but not the first. Also, all of the airlines are being more picky about how many carryons you can have (and actually checking how many you have and whether they are within the size constraints). I think there are a few exceptions made for stuff like carseats. :)

Yeah, many just charge for the second bag.. I'd post the PDF, but I dunno if tha's possible :P

I still think it's lame.

I HOPE that they are serious about keeping their constraints on carry-ons.. cuz that's where it could get crazy. Watch, they'll charge for them as well!

erf.. yeah, carseats. I'm sure they'll charge for those.

We can thank American Airlines for this. They started the trend. It was all over the news in May and a lot of airlines followed suit.

They announced that they would be charging $15 for the FIRST bag checked.... so you can't take any baggage for free anymore on AA.

(See the news piece here.)

I know, that's so lame.

United is the same, so are a few others... my brother thinks it's idiotic and I can't blame him. For those that travel lots for work - it's ridiculous.

I'm worried about the carry-ons.. I mean, I assume that's next and all.

No doubt. *shakes head* It'd almost be cheaper to MAIL your stuff to your destination...

United, Delta, and American are all charging for first check bag. This is part of an effort to whittle down their share of price-sensitive customers and cater to the more profitable and easy-to-manage business-travel segment. Anyone who has preferred status doesn't have to pay the charges, yet we generally pay more for tickets since we buy them with shorter notice. And we get to sit in the front half of the plane too where there is generally more legroom. And we get to board first and claim overhead space before everyone else. And we're far less likely to check a bag anyway.

I dunno. My brother travels a ton... (marketing/sales/support peeps get kinda screwed I think)... and he's pretty pissed about it. He's more annoyed with the per bag weight... I think.

But, anyways... so for those of us who don't travel a ton for business but do travel enough during the year for personal... gets screwed. :P
