Seeing the light

Stephen Colbert satirizes the upcoming ban on incandescent light bulbs but finally brings a small bit of attention to a very serious subject for me (starting at about 1:12):

I've blogged about this before elsewhere, getting no response whatsoever, but as the date looms ever closer, I'm getting increasingly concerned about the federally mandated ( Read more... )

Whew, another concerned citizen! (It's not all in my imagination.) Well, if nobody else is going to do something (as it seems), maybe we should start a movement. (Do you think we'll get the government's attention if we show up in our pirate ship brandishing, er, our oil lamps?)

Actually, I'm seriously thinking of writing to my congressperson about this. (I subscribe to an ADHD magazine, and I never see any mention of the light bulb issue. It seems like the law is a done deal; I can't understand why nobody is fighting it based on the disability issue.)

Can you actually still get oil lamps? Are they cheaper than candles? (I mean the good-quality candles that don't have lead in the wicks!)

And if that doesn't get their attention, we can become light bulb pirates, smuggling them up and down the coast to people who need them. (This is the sort of law that started piracy and smuggling in the first place--back in the early 1700s when the British government passed a law saying the American colonies could only buy products from England, at inflated prices. People actually welcomed pirates ( ... )

Is that like the energy saving light bulbs? Not sure if that's the same thing as you're talking about with the fluro? I only think of fluro as being used in some of those longer tube lighting like they tend to have in schools and offices and larger areas; some people have them as kitchen lighting.

They've kind of switched over to them here, at least encouraging people to use them... quite a lot of people do... but I don't really like them, they're too bright!... ironic aye, but you can still of course buy the regular light globes everywhere - and I still do, I just prefer a more muted lower-wattage light, it seems more relaxing.
