The new Star Trek movie is coming, with an all-new cast playing the beloved characters I watched in syndication as a child. Here's an age breakdown of both casts actors

first off, you are a great beg Dork. (consider the source, it's not an insult)
I'm not sure hollywood's to blame. They are in the business of making money. When the populace at large is more interested in good acting than a pretty face we'll see older stars.
Not that I'm going to bet that an average person will be able to ever appreciate art of any kind with the lack of funding it receives in schools.
Not sure which is the horse and which is the cart. Hollywood makes decisions based on what they THINK people want. But movies like Star Wars prove that you can do a movie without assuming your audience is a bunch of tools.
Especially in a situation like this, where they KNOW this movie will make money due to all the fanboys who will go see it even if it has Jack Nicholsen playing Kirk.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the movie is set before the time of the original series. I know it's supposed to be an alternate timeline but Kirk got command of the enterprise years after it was built in the original series, while it appears he commandeers it fresh out of the shipyards in the movie.
Call me a godless heathen but I have to roll my eyes every time they try to reconcile TOS with the TNG/DS9/VOY era. I wish they'd just considered TNG "inspired by" TOS so it wouldn't be burdened by being in the same universe as roman/nazi planets and starship computers that used tapes. While TOS was ahead of the curve for it's era, modern Trek is a totally different animal and trying to retcon the 70s camp out of TOS is pure nostalga.
I agree. Nothing ignores me than watching Trek writers try to explain why the Klingons in the original show look different than they do in the new series.
That being said, if you're paying tribute to the original series you might want work a little harder to get the characters right. I don't expect anyone to try to play Kirk like Shatner.
The previews make it seem like Kirk is taking the Enterprise as the first Captain, but the movie credits list an actor playing Captain Pike. Not sure how they're gonna reconcile that.
Also, even if Kirk is the first one to Captain the Enterprise, that doesn't explain his youth.
I know in the film he's supposed to be either a cadet or not even in Starfleet. From what I understand it's supposed to be about temporal fuckery and future Spock getting together "The Boys" to un-fuck everything in the past.
