Religion is a murky, elusive, and many-headed beast. The very word itself defies definition. Oh, you can look it up in any dictionary readily enough, but all that will tell you is its common usage in the English language. *applauds* Wow. This was really well thought out. I've always believed that "religion" is one of those words that has a different meaning to every person. Like "home". No two people think and feel about that word in exactly the same way, and even if they share the same concept of what home means, it is bound to be a different place, thus altering the "personal" meaning of the word. Ambiguity is inherent in such words. They have to be if they are to have meaning. It sounds counter intuitive, but it isn't. I know science seeks to pin down meaning in an attempt to be precise and this article shows the depth of thought you put in. A word like that...to have universal meaning it must mean all things rather than just one. The way I see it, there isn't just one thing that is sacred. No matter the etymology of the word, you have to use the word as it stands today. That...or within the context of your paper, define it yourself so that it says what YOU want it to say ( ... )
