Oh goody

Nov 29, 2007 05:43

Let me preface this entry by saying I almost NEVER shop for myself. I don't even like to shop, and I wear very little jewelry - usually only small silver hoop earrings and my wedding ring. However ( Read more... )

Well, maybe so. :) But I need a muse if I'm going to continue trudging through 90,000 words, so I'll grab one when I see it! And since the movie 300 inspired me to set my story in Sparta, it's the least I can do to thank those nice poor people at Warner Brothers.

Quite right. Now that I see that this is a selfless act of charity, I must support you wholeheartedly. *grins*

Go on, spoil yourself!

I say yes, because they're cool items and anything to help you feel closer to your characters is all good. *nods* But I would find it hard to choose between the shield pendant and the helmet ring.

Thank you, Coquillage! I needed someone to say that, because we're not made of money over here, and it does seem a little frivolous. But I do think it will help give me a little inspiration.

I'm all for the shield pendant because *he's* wearing it and to give it to his lady love . . . Sigh. See, I can get inspired by catalogues, too!

LOL - Bill asked me the other day if I had heard any feedback about 300. He was thinking about renting it. *smirk* I said I had - but I didn't mention they were oiling each other in your garage.

I'm almost done with my story. Must stop getting distracted . . .

No, Mary--you must tear yourself away from my silly post and GET BACK TO YOUR STORY! You can do it. Finish it today!

Then I'll find plenty of distractions for you. Yes, I'm leaning towards the shield as well. That way "he" can always protect me. *sigh*

Just warn Bill that the movie is more like fantasy than reality. If you go in looking for a straight historical drama, you'll be weirded out. But if you know it's going to be over the top, then you can just sit back and enjoy the experience.

I'M DONE! Now poor Bel has to slog through it. *collapses*

LOL - Bill is fine with fantasy as long it's the women who are interested in same-sex "relations" rather than the men. No wait, that's not the point of the movie. :) Honestly, I don't think he'll appreciated the oiled bodies as much as you do, but I think he'd like it. :)

Congratulations! Excellent. Now I can send over an oiled Spartan with a whip to prod Bel into betaing it quickly.

Thanks, KJ. They have a PotC section too. Did you see any Captain Norris pieces? ;)

Oi Vey...Now, this is cute.

I never saw the film 300 (the remake or the original) but yes, I do love Spartan history, even though I skip over the man/boy love thing they were so fond of. I liked the shield pendant, heck I liked quite a few things.

What a fascinating society! That's why I'm loving writing this story from a girl's viewpoint. But on your comment, I take the position that various sources are in disagreement about the man/boy love thing - it's also interpreted as mentoring and a close, non-sexual relationship. Especially since marriage and having babies to build the army was such a high priority. So, yeah. That's my position. :)

I agree about that facinating Society. Lennon was facinated by their society, and in many ways communism was created from that. There has never been a civilzation like that.

There is a debate about the forced relations between boys/recruits and their men/leaders. I do believe the forced sexaul realtionships happened. They had to have absolute faith in one another. I think the forced sex was one way. Having babies was a priority, but since so many boy babies were killed to wean out the strong from the weak, well the population was never very high. This way of life was doomed to die out. LOL..I loved the reaction of the Atheneans to Sparta's shocking belief in equality between men and women!

Yes! That's going to play a huge part of the last third of my novel. Melaina gets word that Alexandros has been killed in battle, and it's the last straw of her many sacrifices to Sparta. She flees Sparta with her young son, before he has to be taken to the military school. She will not give her son to Sparta to be killed as well. She ends up in Athens, where she will eventually marry an Athenian. I've got all sorts of socio/political conflict for her to go through as her new guy treats her like a subservient Athenian woman. Of course, I haven't written that part yet, but that's the plan.
