This site http://www.affter.org/fibro.htm has about the best, most comprehensive information that I have found so far. it explains what it is and what causes it in light of the most recent research, which is incredibly refreshing. The only thing it doesnt seem to do is explain the pain in any detail, but then its horses for courses really because its one thing to describe something in words and quite another to actually understand what that really means. But trust me on this - the pain of Fm is like the seven plagues of Egypt - there are many different types of pain sensation and when its in full flow not even the strongest of painkillers will take it away.
But I think the single most refreshing thing about this website is that it states that depression is a result of the pain, not that FM is a result of depression - something that UK doctors seem very slow to understand.
I cannot count the amount of times I have struggled to explain this complex illness to people who have never heard of it, and the best I have come up with is to say you feel like you are coming down with the flu ALL THE TIME and then add to that muscle cramps and spasms that can last for weeks - and all you get is a blank look in return. The underlying causes of the illness are very hard to explain, but this website explains it all very well.
