The world was a very bleak place. It barely held any sustenance of life in it, yet no one questioned the world any more. They were living, and that was good enough for them. They didn’t care if the world that they had wrapped themselves in hated them or gave them nothing to look forward to; all they wanted to do was live and be allowed to do whatever they wanted. The world was very dark, both literally and metaphorically. It was like living in a world of living rot. There was no reason to still be alive, for humanity to still exist, yet they prospered and lived on in such disgusting manners.

It was a wonder they even processed emotions other than hate and anger. Seldom do you see someone kind in a world like this and seldom do you see most people be receptive to the kindness. Anyone who was gentle and caring was immediately belittled, hurt and made fun of-they couldn’t handle having someone with a kind heart in a world that made them cynical and bitter. It was like having a bright light hanging above them after having lived under the world for decades upon decades. To them, the kindness and generosity was filth. They didn’t need such a thing in their midst.

With a world like this, Alyss had to wonder how ze was still alive. Curled up in a corner near hir dinky, small area of a house (it barely classified as that) as ze watched people walk on by, making sure hir head was bowed down low enough so that none of the monsters that called themselves humans could see hir observing them. If anything, ze almost had practically no reason to believe that ze was even breathing. Hir arms ached, bruises lined upon weak and bony limbs as hir fingers clenched weakly into hir fist.

Hir clothes were filthy, the hem of the dress caked in mud and trash, looking ugly due to rain that had befell hir many, many times as ze sat out of hir home. Ze didn’t particularly like to sit out here and watch the world revolve further into its disgusting spiral, but Alyss also needed a reminder that ze was breathing- hir lungs were taking in air and then it would release it. Ze was no different than the rest of them in that regard. Just like them, who breathed and exuded asocial behaviours, Alyss wanted to live most of all and be able to stretch hir legs.

… Yet, even though ze wanted to stretch hir legs, ze never once got up from hir place. It was as if ze was limiting hirself, not giving hirself a chance to get up and actually do what ze really wanted to do-

Ze wanted to make hir own world, not this one, a world to live in. Ze wanted to go out and see what the world was like besides hir grubby alleyway where everyone only stared at hir with disapproval in their eyes. Weak legs shook as ze finally stood, arms aching and sore from having been wrapped around hir knees that had been pressed against hir chest for a very long time. Alyss was known as the moving stain in that alley; not moving nor doing anything else. Many thought her disgusting and incapable of doing basic human functions; walking, speaking, thinking, eating or even going to the bathroom. They believed hir to be just like a baby.

But Alyss was far from that, and today- ze was going to prove it to them. Stood up from where ze was with hir hair a horrible, tangled mess, hir dress stained with all sorts of fluids from the alleyway and hir eyes sunken in and looking tired. Hir body was weak and ze was sure that if ze had stayed there any longer, ze would have died; sure, ze didn’t lessen hir probability of death coming, but ze did at least give hirself a chance to explore before ze died.

Alyss always wanted to see the world for once. Even if it was grime, rot and maggots or cruelty disguised as kindness Alyss still had a desire to see it and maybe make hirself happy for once.

Ze had read it all the times in books of tales of the old.

Maybe Alyss could do what those heroes did too.
