Looking for Excerpts worthy of commenting about from "New Moon" and "Eclipse."

Aug 10, 2008 10:46

Currently, I'm working on a Twilight versus Breaking Dawn rant and comparison. However, as this is turning into a slow, but steady rant on the poor quality of the series overall, I've realized that I'm going to need some quotes from New Moon and Eclipse to comment on ( Read more... )

i wish i could remember the exact passages, but in eclipse there are a couple of times where bella is throwing herself at edward as their making out escalates and he patiently pulls her off of him, and then the whole discussion about how he wants to get married first. she's advocating abstinence, which is fine and dandy, but she's also making the woman out to be the sexual deviant temptress who wants to sin so badly, and the man as the moral, pure figure who knows better.

i don't know if you're looking for the anti feminist parts as well, but in eclipse when bella wants to see jacob, edward forbids her, and when she tries to defy him and sneak out, she finds that the engine has been taken out of her car. then there's the whole thing where she goes completely COMATOSE when edward leaves, and does suicidal things because she hears his voice in her head like jumping off cliffs -- and then when he returns, she takes him back, totally forgetting about how he hurt her; because after all, he hurt her because he loves her.

My personal issue with the Twilight morals is that they are viewed as a finite set of rigidly defined rules, like don't drink human blood and don't have sex before marriage. But that's not going to be enough to live your life as a moral person: there are always going to be situations that your rulebook doesn't cover, no matter what it's called. Looking at morality as a part of human relations is more fruitful, since you can apply universal principles to situations, like Kant, who asked if he was treating the other person as a person instead of as a means to an end ( ... )

I just loved your first paragraph. While I have difficulties with many of the morals Stephanie Meyer attempts to present within the series, I never thought of it in such a manner. Maybe I can tie it in with a bit of developmental psychology. (Moral development, I believe.)

I think I read your post. I really enjoy your views, so thank you very much for sharing them. (I just might have to quote your first paragraph. Your viewpoint is very well-stated.)

I have only read parts of Twilight and Breaking Dawn, but I've been keeping detailed notes on repetitive word choice ("chuckle" and "snicker" and "smirked" are some examples of Meyer's favorite words), and I have highlighted every description of Edward (and his perfect/glorious/beautiful face) for the first two-hundred pages.

If any of this would be useful to you -- if you are focusing in any way on her sophomoric vocabulary and overall lack of literary talent -- let me know, and I'll email some lists to you.

I'd love that. I haven't been keeping notes on her repetitive vocabulary or poor diction, so anything pertaining to that will really be helpful.

The only thing about that I have for an argument right now is Bella's "chocolate eyes" and Edward's "topaz eyes", and alone, they're of little merit, so additions are much appreciated!

There's a nice catalogue of things that are repeated which was compiled by otahyoni a while back as well.

Hm, the one thing that comes up immediately when talking about Eclipse and poor character development (and this sort of crosses with New Moon) is Bella and Edward's separation and reunion. He leaves her early in New Moon, and she grieves for the entire book, only barely returning to normal human behavior when she meets Jacob. You sort of start seeing some character development. Maybe Bella is putting the past behind, maybe she's becoming more optimistic, but alas, that's all destroyed the minute Edward comes back into her life. As soon as she sees him, nothing develops. She's right back to where she was in Twilight. Obsessed with him, and he with her. He puts on some self-induced angst in Eclipse, telling her he'll never forgive himself, but after a while we stop hearing about that and it goes back to Edward controlling her life and keeping her from doing what she likes. Bella allows this. She isn't a tougher person now, having been through the grief of heartbreak, she doesn't push her opinions onto Edward as she should now that he ( ... )

I agree completely on this synopsis of New Moon--I actually did read a little of it. Not enough, of course, but I still read and heard enough to get a basic summary of the book. (I got sick of it when Edward left and Stephanie Meyer left numerous almost-blank pages with month names on them.)

Thank you very much for your view on character development!
