Anything we should know?: Seiken Densetsu 3 is the best Square game ever, you guys.

In Character Information
Name: Kevin
Age: 15
Birthday: Pffft like he’d remember his own birthday (Spoiler: Nov. 30)
Game/Series: Seiken Densetsu 3
Staff Member or Student?: Student

Appearance:
Kevin is half-beastman, and while he looks quite different from the rest of his wolf-like race, he still has plenty of features that make him appear decidedly nonhuman. He’s of fairly average height and noticeably muscular. He has dark skin that may or may not be covered in a fine layer of hair/fur, and a wild mane of yellow hair that probably hasn’t been washed in… ever. His face is very human (and still rather boyish) in appearance, which makes his yellow eyes, pointed ears, and razor-sharp fangs all the more surprising when you first notice them.

The awkward way in which Kevin walks and runs suggests that he might not be entirely used to walking upright (the claws probably don’t help much, either), or that he just never learned properly. Kevin is not very… careful. He’s a bit clumsy since his solution to every problem is “just hit it and see if it does anything”. While he’s not a complete klutz, the only time where he is truly graceful is when he is training or fighting- his movement becomes so fluid and artful that you have to wonder if he’s even the same person.

Like the rest of the beastmen, Kevin is a werewolf. And the game is pretty inconsistent about how it works- first you’re told that beastmen transform automatically once night falls, but then you find out they live in perpetual moonlight in their homeland. SO YEAH. Either way, Kevin is a special case because he’s half-human. He can transform at night, but only if he needs to (i.e. when there’s some fightin’ to do). His werewolf form is the generic werewolf enemy sprite your stereotypical bipedal wolf monster with shaggy gray hair.

Kevin’s voice is fairly deep and gruff for a fifteen year old. He speaks very slowly and deliberately, and tends to pause mid-sentence a lot (probably because he forgot what he was about to say). He doesn’t often speak in complete sentences, and when he does, they’re very short. More often than not, he prefers to communicate with lots of grunting and pointing than actually saying anything.

Kevin’s usual attire is pretty simple, consisting of a fur-lined vest, some loose pants tied with a sash, and a silly-looking feathered beret thing that kind of gets lost in his giant mess of hair sometimes. He always goes barefoot. Always. At least until he got to Zenithia. His new look is pretty similar, except now he wears a vest that actually buttons in the front, a pair of work gloves, the obligatory goggles, and steel-toed boots, which he will be very, very unhappy about.

Personality:
Usual moods: Kevin isn’t as hateful as the rest of his race, but old habits are hard to break. He doesn’t anger easily, which is a good thing because he is very loud and violent when he does. When he DOES get frustrated or confused (happens a lot), he’ll more often than not just pout and grumble to himself in a corner. He still thinks that the solution to every problem is force and will often resort to brute strength to accomplish something without thinking it through first. Since the only thing he’s ever known was grueling training, everything else is bright and shiny and exciting and new to him. Nowadays he goes through life staring at everything in a bright-eyed, bewildered way, since it’s likely he’s experiencing whatever it is for the first time. He doesn’t have much of a sense of humor because he doesn’t really know what humor is, so jokes and sarcasm are lost on him. He takes everything very literally.

At the same time, though, it would be hard to call him naïve or sheltered, since his life hasn’t exactly been sunshine and rainbows. Kevin might be a little slow on the uptake, but he’s not stupid. He doesn’t like being treated as such and he’ll know if someone’s talking down to him. Protip: you should probably avoid doing that that since it’s the surefire way to make him angry.

Interaction with others: Awkward, to say the least. Kevin still assumes that everyone hates him, so he’s not going to go out of his way to approach someone first. He might seem a little standoffish and withdrawn before he works up the courage to talk to someone new. He doesn’t mean to come off as distant, he’s just used it as a defense mechanism for so long that he doesn’t know any better. If he approaches you, chances are he trusts you, even if it’s a little bit.

Interactions with friends: He hasn’t had many (well, okay, ANY) friends aside from his beloved pet Karl, but if that’s any indication, it’s likely that Kevin will cling to anyone who shows him a shred of kindness. He would probably do anything to keep his friends from harm and be unwaveringly loyal to them, possibly to the point of putting himself in danger if it meant protecting them. If he ever became angry or lashed out at someone he cared about or respected, he would feel downright terrible afterwards. On the other hand, if someone he cared about was angry at him he would probably shy away from them like a wounded animal.

Ridiculous wall of text Backstory:

Kevin’s story starts long before he was even born, when the beastmen were little more than slaves to humans. They were mistreated and abused, and like most oppressed people, it was only a matter of time before they rose up and rebelled. A fierce beastman warrior led the revolt, freeing his race from slavery and leading them into the Moonlight Forest, where they founded their own kingdom. The rebel leader was from that point forward known as the Beast King, and he was infamous for his bloodlust and utter contempt of humankind.

…Which is why it came as a shock when it was discovered that a human woman was carrying his child.

The exact relationship was unknown, but the result was Kevin, an outcast from birth, but also the heir to the Beast Kingdom throne- the only heir. Realizing this, the Beast King set to work immediately in order to make his son worthy enough for the title. Practically from the moment he could walk on his own, Kevin was forced into rigorous training. It quickly became apparent that he was at a great disadvantage because of his human blood- he was far weaker than other beastman children his age, and he didn’t appear to have inherited his father’s lycanthropy. This caused much dissent in the Beast Kingdom, and Kevin was shunned even more despite the Beast King’s desire to raise him as a warrior and eventually a king. Kevin knew that he was hated by pretty much everyone, even his father, so in an attempt to spite them all, he threw himself into his training. For years, all he knew was fighting and anger as he honed his skills in order to prove himself. Like all beastmen, he was taught that the only emotions that mattered were hatred and anger, and his sole purpose in life was to hate and persecute humans the same way they had done to his race. While he never overcame the weaknesses of his human side, it was clear that Kevin was becoming a bloodthirsty monster much like his father.

But all of that changed one day when he was exploring the forest outside the kingdom. He happened upon a wolf pup who’s mother had been killed by another forest creature, and something inside him that he had fought so long to destroy awoke. For the first time in his life, Kevin felt pity and compassion. He looked at the wolf pup and saw himself- motherless and without anyone to care for him; completely alone and shunned by the world. He wasn’t sure what to do, but he knew he couldn’t leave the little pup alone to die- or worse, grow up to be a feral beast that would leave other helpless animals motherless. Without a second thought, he named the pup Karl, and from that point on they were inseparable. Karl grew strong and healthy under Kevin’s care, and Kevin learned what it was like to have someone who truly loved him. Happiness, trust, love and caring- Kevin didn’t know what all of these new feelings were, just that he liked them a whole lot more than rage and hate. He started neglecting his training in order to steal off into the woods to play and hunt with Karl all day. He started to forget why he had to hate humans so much- he was half-human himself! He even began to question whether or not winning his father and his kingdom’s approval even mattered. Thanks to Karl, now he knew there were so many other ways to earn respect than through fighting your way to the top.

However, the Beast King would have none of that. The idea that his son, whom he had worked so hard to groom into the perfect warrior, had gone soft enraged him beyond belief. Kevin was no longer welcome in the castle, but that really didn’t phase him much because he had grown so accustomed to living in the forest. Meanwhile, the Beast King sought to save face after the embarrassment that his failure of a son had caused, and began to work on his plan to exact revenge on humanity for their cruelty. It was around this time that a mysterious figure that called himself Deathjester approached the Beast King, offering his help with the invasion. The Beast King wasn’t interested until Deathjester mentioned his skill with dark magic, and then the king got an idea- he would use Deathjester’s powers to give Kevin one last chance to prove himself. The evil jester was happy to oblige

The boy and his wolf were wandering in the woods as usual when Karl suddenly turned and attacked. Confused and taken by surprise, Kevin fought back in self-defense, only using enough force to keep the enraged pup from seriously hurting him. But Karl’s attacks were relentless and ferocious, and he probably would have killed Kevin had his beastman side not taken over at that point. For the first time, Kevin transformed into a werewolf, and being completely unprepared for it, he went totally berserk. The next thing he remembered clearly was holding Karl in his arms as the little pup died.

Devastated and ashamed, Kevin buried the only friend he ever had and returned to the castle of the Beast Kingdom, where he did little else but mope about and watch in disinterest as the other beastmen prepared to invade the human city of Wendel. While wandering through the castle, Kevin happened to hear his father’s voice on the other side of a wall, and listened in horror as the Beast King thanked Deathjester for making Karl go berserk and forcing Kevin to transform. In a fit of rage, he charged right through the wall and attacked his father, but the Beast King merely laughed and lauded him for finally regaining the sense of pure hatred that he had lost when he found Karl. Kevin knew he was playing right into his father’s hands, but at that point he was so beyond pissed that he didn’t care. When he tried to attack his father again, however, the Beast King just grabbed him and threw him out of the castle. Literally. Like, he landed back in the woods.

Canon Standing:
Kevin is being yanked right at the beginning of the game, after he gets thrown out of the castle but before running into Deathjester and being told to head for Wendel. So he hasn’t met any of the other SD3 kids, but it would be really awesome if they all met up later and became BFFs just fyi. APP SEIKEN DENSETSU

The Calling:
Kevin was knocked unconscious after being thrown out of the castle and landing in the forest. When he came to, there was a strange figure in a long, black coat sitting nearby. The figure, neither human nor beastman, introduced himself as Mickey and explained that he had seen everything that had just happened. Kevin was a little put off by this complete stranger that seemed to know his life story, but as the figure began to explain about a magical castle called Zenithia, he found himself completely enthralled. Mickey told him that at Zenithia, he could learn more than just how to fight, and even learn how to use his powers for good. He went on to explain that Kevin didn’t have to be like the rest of his people if he didn’t want to- that he could make his own choices, one of which was to go or to stay. Kevin was still a bit torn- he was still furious at his fath- no, the Beast King- and wanted to avenge Karl’s death more than anything. But the mouse’s words had captivated him, and in a rare moment of insight, Kevin realized that the greatest revenge he could ever get on his father the Beast King would to be the opposite of everything he was ever raised to be, and he could do that at Zenithia. After deliberating for a while, he accepted King Mickey’s offer.

Anything Else?:
-Not a furry. Honest.
-Kevin is a huge Derpy McGee when it comes to machines. The most technologically advanced thing he’s ever since is a waterwheel. Maybe a drawbridge. Expect him to break everything he touches.
-He’s strong. Really strong. Not as much as any of the ‘bots here at Zenithia of course, but he is kind of a near game-breaking powerhouse meatshield is pretty strong nonetheless. He also still thinks that everyone is stronger than he is, which may have been true in the Beast Kingdom, but not so much everywhere else. It would be wise to avoid shaking hands with him lest he crush all of your fingers on accident.
-He might technically be a prince, but he definitely doesn’t consider himself one, especially since he disowned his father after being thrown out of the castle.
-I dunno how often werewolf!Kevin will be showing up. Probably not much.
-He likes being scratched behind the ears. :3
-SPOILER: Karl’s not really dead. It was all an ~IlLuSiOn~ so maybe Zenithia can swing by later and pick him up and the other SD3 kids while we’re at it?
