Sometimes nothing works for me. One of my last resorts is to tell myself the story of the wizard of oz, in the most detail that I can, the movie version. Sometimes I start from the beginning and sometimes I start from wherever I remember leaving off last time. If this fails and it looks like another sleepless night I tell myself to just rest and keep my eyes closed. Sometimes once I stop stressing I can fall asleep.

If I have two nights in a row of no sleep I take a prescription pill because after three nights of no sleep I am not fit to drive or even to talk. It puts me in a really really bad mood.

Ambian is NOT your friend. It made me a mess and I know of a lot of other people who did really strange things while taking it. It was like a little animal that would wake up at night in my brain and would make me eat all kinds of weird crap. One night I feel asleep after putting on a pot of rice and nearly burned the house down. I have not taken it for a long time now and that is a good thing.

I haven't heard of that but it doesn't sound like a safe drug at all - I used to get a similar reaction to a sleeping pill I used to take many years ago.

Look it up, it is kind of amusing to see all of the weird stuff that it makes you do. People would even have sex in their sleep, drive, all kinds of weird stuff.

Not being able to fall asleep at all is terrible. Luckily it only happens to me maybe twice a year, to stay awake until the morning. I used to have problems falling asleep, and my doctor prescribed me Stillnox (Ambien's Italian version, as far as I know). That was WEIRD! The first few times it caused light hallucinations and strange dreams. I still take it occasionally, when I'm still awake well past midnight, or if I need to go to bed early and get up early and MUST get some decent amount of sleep. The side effects are hardly noticeable, but it only helps me to fall asleep. I still keep waking up during the night which is also annoying. When I can't sleep or wake up in the middle of the night, I usually read or do crosswords. And I do that without wearing glasses, so because I am short-sighted, I have the feeling it makes me tired/sleepy. Listening to radio podcasts (speech only, no music) also helps me fall asleep.

I really envy those people who say they fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow. I often wish I was a cat as they have no problem at all going to sleep - lol.
