There are so many holes in that episode and so many ways it could have been done differently and better. If it had been a two-parter, that would have helped at least somewhat.

I've cooled a little bit to my original strong objections over Twilight becoming an alicorn, although I still don't entirely like it. In one way, it's because the original creator only wanted Celestia and Luna to be alicorns and I don't like them going against that vision of hers. In another way, I don't know what to think on those grounds because if the creator's wishes had been followed, we wouldn't have Cadance (whom I love).

In any case, though, if they wanted Twilight to become an alicorn, it definitely should have been handled better. It didn't make sense to me that her figuring out the flaw in some sorcerer's spell would mean that she had learned enough to qualify in becoming an alicorn princess.
