Larry O'Brien goes down. John Baird is still tied in there too, I think I'd like to see them all go down.

John Baird on environmental action: "We are prepared to go first, to provide real leadership, but we also want to get countries like the United States, like China, like India on board." So... we'll go first, just as long as we all go together ( Read more... )

hmmm, from what i read somewhere, the 2nd degree thing was the jury's acknowledgment that the evidence was somewhat circumstancial - i guess that was part of the defence's argument, not sure of the details.

shitty for the families, for sure. at least it was six counts of it, and he has been charged for 20 other murders. that should hopefully keep him in prison forever.

from a newspaper article:

Although it is considered a lesser charge, second-degree murder carries the same penalty as first-degree murder: life in prison. But a person convicted of second-degree murder can become eligible for parole within 10 to 25 years.

The criminal difference between the two is subtle. In deciding on second-degree murder, the jury evidently agreed Pickton meant to murder the women, but were unable to conclude the murders were planned or deliberate.

alan here again - there is so much nuance in the law here that it doesn't make much sense to get worked up about it, in my opinion. 6 counts of murder, any way you slice it, means he likely won't get parole for a long time, if ever. plus there's the other trial to come. but then again, there's karla holmoka on the streets of montreal or wherever she lives now....

just read into it more and it looks like they're not sure if they'll proceed with the second trial, since he'll already be serving 6 life sentences. shitty that there's no closure for the families in that case, but i can see their point.

Yeah I heard that too, basically that whether they go forward with it is between financial sense and moral justice. Does suck for the families though.
