it is such a wonderful*insert whatever* thing to get caught up in the structure of a sentence; the correct spelling of words; and the proper use of punctuation that simple mistakes, typos, as well as lack of knowlege seem to bring out frustration and mockery from people that are obviously above such flaws. the point of communication seems to get ( Read more... )

Totally agree with you on the spelling and grammar. I'm not perfect either. I haven't seen the icons you speak of yet, but I'm sure I'll run in to one sooner or later, although sometimes I will ignore such things more often than not. They can be sadly anoying though at times.

I hear you on the saying things without putting too much thought into the the thought process. We mean one thing, but sometimes we can put our foot in our mouths without even realizing it. It can be as easy to err in written form as it is verbally. Yet we are only human, so do not beat yourself up over it.

living in the south, i tend to be very conscious of most slanderous statements (or so i thought). it just really hit me when i read my own comment that i hadn't given that particular phrase thought before yanno. *hugs back* things goin ok for you, lainie?

Hmm on the spelling and grammar.. trying to explain to group members this evening a few things about being consistent through powerpoints and reports.

They gave me the report to look over... stuff was cited differently each time. On the powerpoints... I'm not entirely sure on formal rules for those, but I've always found that staying consistent works best. Either capitalize each major word like you are writing a slogan or something, or write it like a normal sentence. Watching them do a bulleted page, and each line was different. It made me sad :(

i gave a power point presentation last month. essentially, it's a visual medium and imo, it's important to have a pleasant flow to the eye when you look at it or you shouldn't do it. it wasn't perfect lol, but it was a flow.

man, the crappy presentations to come out of that class was rather embarassing. i did the power point because we had to have something 'visual' and really they are simple to put together with really nice aesthetics. some of my classmates cut 2-3 magazines pics and put them on huge posterboard to pass around. my 5th grade class did better shit----and that was before computers being common place.

did they get it together?

I have one of those grammar icons. I have never used it, though ( ... )

Mostly, what you do is write without capitalization and use punctuation creatively.
lol to be honest--i'm a lazy typist. i can get shit out of my head faster if i just start typing and not stress capitalization. thank you the creatively part made me giggle.

most people aren't like me--going back and obsessively correcting mistakes.
when i am bored or procrastinating, i go through and correct as i see them. sometimes i sit here wincing, painfully, at the stupidest of typos. early i typed 'are' when i meant to type 'or'. i see my flaws faster in hard copy than i do on the screen.

i hadn't realized that you had that icon, even though i did know that you had some pet peeves. (i think we all do about certain things within grammar itself). i know it's stupid to let an icon bother me, but i just saw it for the 6th or 7th time here recently and it was getting on my last nerves.

What DOES bug me is when someone is trying to tell me something and talking down to me and generally treating me like an idiot and they are typing in l33t speak or ( ... )

You know, since I read this post, I've been looking at your comments to other people and the post itself, and you don't make a lot of mistakes. I mean, you can spell the hard words (a lot of people would have trouble spelling essentially) and you don't make the common spelling mistakes. You also don't make a lot of grammatical mistakes. Hell, I probably make more than you do (I end sentences with prepositions all.the.time ( ... )

most of my typos are from typing without thinking about the words, if that makes sense. by the time i start typing a word, my mind is already on the next sentence. i'm not sure of what the most common mistakes would be, but i do tend to make mistakes almost constantly. (for the longest time i typed 'thier' instead of 'their'. yanno, i before e. it still trips my ass up. lol.

What I do on the debates is check how I'm reacting (physically and mentally) to a comment. If I am having a bad reaction (seeing red, feeling hot, my heart rate increases) then I don't respond. That IS hard for me, as I always like to have the last word.
LOL you and me both. it takes a lot for me to shut up once i am started.

are you working on any songs that you actually like or just going through basic chord progression practices?

i saw a discussion on oprah the other day about racially insulting slang use.... i agree it is best not to use it at all... delete it entirely from our vocabulary. :-)
but grammar nazis.... lolol see, it's so easy to racially stereotype :-P :-P
serously, people who fuss too much about the grammar are silly. as you say.. communication is the important thing. :-)

actually, i think i caught the tale end of that show. often we fling negative wording and statements without being aware that we are doing it. just a bit humbling to realize that i had done it when i know better heh.

But I loves me my cranky editor icon.

FWIW, I don't do it for careless mistakes. I only trot it out for trolling douchebags who try to be pompous or superior or when I'm posting in one of the dot_ communities or when I'm complaining about something from offline.

And, I mean, c'mon. It's one cool ass icon.

LOL there is something about shakespeare with attitude that i like. yes, it is a 'grammar' icon, but it isn't the one that i continue to wince over. i think it is due to the attitude that comes with it as being snobbish with the corrections.

here, whiskeygirl8 has the icon in the first column. this particular icon seems to be gaining popularity.
