First Mediation today

I have my first mediation today and lucky me, its solo. My boss kind of dropped it into my lap yesterday afternoon. He simply smiled and said "you'll do fine, just wing it." That's not what you want to hear from your boss. I guess my boss subscribes to the sink or swim method of teaching. Oh well, I imagine it will be very similar to the pre-trial ( Read more... )

Sorry we missed you guys last night.
Girl is still not feeling well.

And I have had two bosses in a row like that now. Something that I have found works for me? Pulling them aside privately and saying: "I understand you have confidence in me and I appreciate that. I have no doubt I can do this job as well, but given that you have more experience would you please give me a few steps or information in the right direction so that I can be better prepared?"

It was pretty crazy. The mediator was a 75 year old woman who could hardly hear. The couple (defendants) were an old black couple. The husband was perfectly still/silent the entire time. The wife was a different story. It was like dealing with two different women. One minute she was crying. The next minute she was angry with me for causing her family pain. We did not reach a settlement. Regardless, it was a learning experience.
