How the heck do people figure out this registration stuff? I'm overwhelmed by it. I know I need basic kitchen stuff (I gave all my stuff to my brother when he moved to his house), and I think crouchback wants tools. But I have no idea where a good place to get this stuff is. I need a pot set, but I can't figure out which brand (All-Clad? Calphalon? La ( Read more... )

Be Bath and Beyond would be my first thought
It's the german maker of knives with the figure of the twins on it. tat's the best. Let me go look at mine.

Herm, mine were given to my by a professional shef and he chose Beck&Beck for us when we asked him to get us some really good knives.

Pots are a very personal thing and there are as types of pots out there. We LOVE the Le Cruse but they are HEAVY. They are enameled cast iron. Go into one of the May company owned stores or call them and see when they are having the next bridal fair. Go get one of the brides magazines. They have LOTS of info on the different pots and such.

I have heard bad things about All-Clad, have heard bad things about Calphalon. I think I might go and buy one of each, something not too expensive and cook with both of them. I don't know how else to pick. I also love the Le Cruset (i keep on spelling this wrong! no matter how many times I see it) but I do worry about being able to pick it up. Maybe I should just get a cast iron frying pan and a dutch oven and leave the Le C for another life. For knives, i just need to try them to see if they work well with my hands. I know the good brands, and know that it's just a matter of preference. I wish I knew of a kitchen supply store here that has all the stuff so I could play with it.

Williams-Sonoma probably has everything you're looking for, but they tend to be pricey too.

Maybe one of the mail-order places like Chef's Catalog?

You can register at more than one place. We registered at Sur La Table (for kitchen stuff we loved), Bloomingdale's (partly to satisfy mothers' need for something elegant and partly because that category of store sells a wide variety of items) and Target (inexpensive items for friends of modest needs). To our surprise Target was the least used. People may give you gift certificates at the stores you pick ( ... )

Moderately heavy pots are ok. I have reverewear that is my mother's that I use, but I prefer her cuisinart cookware. I just can't lift cast iron stuff all the time. That said, I am getting an iron skillet and a dutch oven.

I have to see if we have a Sur La TAble around here. I haven't been able to find something that is just kitchen stuff other than Williams-Sonoma. I probably have to look further out.

I would appreciate the articles, especially the ones on pots.

You don't have to be physically near a store to get a list there. A stunning number of stores have realized that wedding registries are cash cows (as are birthday lists, baby lists, wish lists, ...). Just, please, for courtesy's sake, don't use the cards that some stores will give you, the ones that say "I'm registered at Target" with the implicit message that you're only inviting the person in hopes he'll buy you something. The stores will encourage you to include those in your wedding invites or shower invites. Don't fall for it. Miss Manners has some biting expostulations on the subject ( ... )
