Note to the man with the toddler who sat behind me on the bus this morning

The moment I saw you and your small child get on and take the seats behind me, I had the irritating suspicion that the next half-hour would be plagued by the rambling of your son/daughter. Unfortunately, my suspicion was correct. Now, I will grant that your child was, on the grand scale of these things, not particularly ill-behaved. They were ( Read more... )

Funny, I was on the bus yesterday [which almost never happens anymore], thinking the entire time about how very strange it is that no one talks at all and trying to think of other situations besides being on public transportation where people completely ignore each other. Like, we will talk to strangers while standing in line or at a show or whatever, but on the bus everyone's very careful not to so much as make eye contact with anyone else ( ... )

I suspect Moonie's point is "There are certain social situations, such as this particular bus, where people are extremely quiet. It's kind of like church. If your child can't be taught, trained, or duct-taped into submission, please find an alternate way to commute. If your child were babbling loudly in church, you would take action. Why not here?"

Well, I was trying to be more subtle, and I'm not quite as militant as that. ;)

Yep, it can get on your nerves, but it sure beats whining, screaming and seat-kicking. Have earplugs, will travel. I have some I sleep in, as self-preservation against Steve's snoring. My alarm clock sits on the night table about ten inches away from my head, and I can't hear it in the morning because the earplugs are so effective. Just a suggestion.

Heh. I guess I should be glad that the times I'm on the metro or the shuttle from my campus to main campus, it's either not been morning, or there have been no kids :) I've probably annoyed people by being on the phone when I'm on the shuttle, though... lol. I should remember to bring a book, but I take it so rarely that I forget.

Talking is defintely better than some of the other generally annoying things a kid can do. But I have the feeling I was the same way as well. I once asked Mom if I took naps too much when I was little, and she responded, "Yeah, when we could get you to be quiet." Heh.
