If you have a copy of your tenants agreement, take a look at it. If there is a housing agency in Athens that specializes in tenant issues (like the Tenants Union in Ann Arbor), contact them.
If you broke the lease, you may be liable for it, but if you're not there, you might be able to settle. See about cutting a deal, at least for the ceiling.
Show this to some folks and work out a plan. You may get off scot-free, or paying a tiny fraction of what they billed you for.
But, UGH. Landlords, especially in college towns. What a pain.
I know! It makes me so mad. I was a good tenant, and I would still be there had I not lost my job and all my money. I'm honestly glad I don't live there anymore, but this is what I get for moving out, I guess.
I'll look into the tenants union thing later. Maybe they'll at least cut out the rent I'm going to owe them for not living there.
