Response to the 'Seto was not adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba' what if at ygo-what-if
Title: Paths Not Traveled

Summary: What if Seto had not been adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba?
Warnings: slight violence on the part of the coughinsanecough yamis
Notes: Seto also lost the chess game, so...
Chapter 1
Seto stared down at the chess board numbly. He'd lost. He'd -lost-. He couldn't believe it. He knew all of Gozaburo's strategies and had set up his own to counter them. There was no way he could have lost. Not in a fair game, anyway. Gozabura had to have cheated. He must have. That was the only way he could have won with Seto pulling out all the stops.
"You cheated." He accused softly, almost inaudibly.
Gozaburo raised an eyeborw. "You cheated." Seto said a little louder. "You cheated! You cheated! YOU CHEATED!" he cried. The matron clapped a hand over his mouth.
"Please, Kaiba-san," she said in a poisoned-honey voice. "He doesn't know what he's talking about. We don't think he understands half of what comes out of his mouth most of the time."
Gozaburo merely sniffed and left. The matron waved after him, flashing a sickeningly sweet smile. Then, once the limo was out of sight, she glared down at Seto. "You stupid boy! Do you want us to lose our primary source of funding!?" She gave him a sharp spanking right then and there and sent Seto to his room.
"Big brother?" Mokuba asked, sitting down next to Seto.
"I'm sorry Mokuba. I blew it. He was our ticket out of this dump, and I couldn't beat him."Seto said guiltily
"it's okay, Seto. He probably wouldn't have made a good dad anyway. We wouldn't be allowed to sit on the furniture or touch stuff because he thought we'd break it." Mokuba said, pouting cutely at the thought.
"And none of his books would have pictures, an we wouldn't be allowed to have even a little pet like a hamster because it could get loose and wreck his fancy stuff." Seto agreed, wrinkling his nose. "No, that's not the kind of home we want at all."
Mokuba shook his head. "No way. We'll find nice parents who'll play wth us and let us get a pet. And a not a hamster, either. A puppy or a kitten."
Seto smiled. "Yeah, that's right. Goodnight, Mokie."
"Goodnight, Seto." Mokuba returned, going back to his room. Seto rolled over on his cot and tried to fall asleep.
