Several years ago, in a dream, somebody told me a joke. It wasn't a great joke, but it was a good joke, and I hadn't heard it before, and when I woke up I remembered the joke and it was still funny enough to make me smirk

Yeah, I can see that as being an explanation for the joke. It's still a little weird, because assembling a new joke that actually works seems to me to take a lot more coherent and linear mental processing than is usually demonstrated in dream-land. (It wasn't just a witticism or pun, it was a full on "a nun and a pygmy walk into a bar" style story. I wish I could remember it today

From what I've heard, dreams are somewhat of a test environment for reality, that your brain goes over pieces of reality that it's particularly interested in and tries out different responses from your vast inventory of possible waking thoughts or actions (with the physical parts turned off). So, if coming up with a new funny joke is something that's possible for you when you're awake, it's a possible response in your sleep -- especially since it doesn't have any big physical actions associated with it. Similarly, I've written new code in my dreams. Too bad it was on weird dream problems I didn't care about when I woke up
