He forgot the Christmas tree, and he’s drunk. They are screaming so loudly that you can hear it from underneath the pillow on your head. You had the smallest sliver of hope that you would be hanging tinsel tonight. You have less hope that Santa will bring you what you really want, a new family.

You awake to the soft thrum of his violin; “Autumn Sonata” for you, his muse. Ethan says it is supposed to sound like the warm colors of sunshine coming through fall leaves, the way you came to each other. This was the romance you always thought you wanted; it feels like something is missing instead.
