Personaly I think yes. Both are valid means of communicating and should be treated as such.

I am terrible at replying to either phone or email messages. Is it on the same level? Almost. I still think a phone call is more personel. It's always easier to send a follow up email with "Hey bitch, respond to my email before I blow up your fucking house!." Just my two cents. :)
