Title: Reading is Fundamental
Pairing: Spike/Giles
Rating: all audiences
Written for: janedavitt for her birthday. I offered her a drabble or a poem, her choice. She asked for Spike/Giles for a drabble or a poem about books. I've kinda lumped the two ideas together into a little ficlet.
Word count: 235
Unbeta'd - but all errors are silvertedy's anyway. Okay, they're really mine. :) But thanks to Silvertedy for the work "pentameter" from her list of words today.

“What are you doing?”

“Hmm?” Spike tilted his head back to find Giles standing behind him. “Reading,” he said in his favorite ‘do you need new glasses?’ voice.

“I can see that.” Giles would have rolled his eyes if he did that sort of thing. He didn’t. “Perhaps I should have been more specific. What are you doing reading a book in ...” he leaned closer to see the page “... is that Grockian?”

Spike ducked his head and tucked the book into his chest. “Maybe,” he mumbled.

Giles glanced over at his bookcase to see what was missing. “You’re reading Romeo and Juliet in Grockian?”

“Well ‘s different, innit?” Spike got all defensive, gesturing with the book in hand. “Got a whole different rhythm, what with only two vowels and thirty-seven consonants.” He’d risen from his chair and now stood toe-to-toe with Giles. “I’m just admiring the translator’s skill with the iambic pentameter.”

“Yes,” Giles smiled, clearly amused. “It’s an excellent translation. I’ve got some love poetry, too. If you’re interested.”

Spike tipped his head slightly, as if giving the offer serious consideration. “Could read to you in bed,” he teased.

“You could,” Giles pulled the book from the shelf and headed for the stairs, leaving Spike dumbfounded for all of two seconds before he took off up the stairs.

“Are they dirty love poems?” he asked as he nudged Giles into the bedroom.
