Apathy?

I feel like, a lot of people lack empathy for others. I've been slowly telling friends and family that my Mom is not as healthy as she once was. The usual response I've been getting in return is something akin to apathy. Most reply by telling me that someone they know had/has that and they're fine and then they go right back to their lives... Witnessing a parent's health decline is tough. Why is everyone around you being self-centered and douchey?

They're not used to me asking for much, instead I'm usually the listener, offerer of support. My aunt tells me that our family is too independent to understand how to band together. My mom's siblings have been checking on her here or there, but they don't visit. I'm burning PTO going to consults and appointments. Once she's settled into her treatment plan, I can go back to my usual work schedule. My "friends" though? I think it doesn't mean anything to their lives, so they aren't internalizing anything I'm saying.

I've noticed the same about the people around me. It seems people in general are so self-centred they cannot "listen" to others sympathetically, unless it's an issue of theirs you're talking about. We're getting too indifferent.
