Pointless - a new Beeb show (or there's no accounting for taste)

POINTLESS. The awful game show that I went to see being filmed has actually made it on to Beeb 2 this week. I can only assume it's because, having spent the dosh to film it, they felt that they may as well screen it. The Radio Times bod describes it as a perverse Family Fortunes with harder questions ...  guess I'd agree with the use of the word ( Read more... )

Good Lord! I do think there is some accounting for taste! Or there should be.

Some viewers may get what they want, but certainly not what they need. Who needs such a thing? I read your earlier post about this, so sad you had to waste a day like that. :-(

I've never been to a thing like that, never been tempted enough I guess. But it could be loads of fun, I imagine, if the show was a good one.

My friend and I were wearing our best rictus grins whilst inexorably losing the will to live...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! Horrible but hilarious! :-D

Now, imagine if there had been a really GOOD show, set in the middle ages with RA as the leading man, and we actually could go and be a live audience... ;-)

Oh, the joy of contemplating that! How long we'd remain a living as opposed to live audience is debatable though; the hyperventilating, thudding of rapidly beating hearts, cracking of swooning heads on chairs and floor - not to mention the drowning in puddles of drool would do for most of us, I think!! What a way to go... ;)

And immediately the lines from the Elvis song Fever entered my mind:

What a lovely way to burn... ;-)

I went to a live taping of David Letterman a few years back, and was kind of naively surprised at how much bullying they did to get us to smile and clap. They even said that if were sitting on the end and didn't look enthusiastic enough, they'd find someone else to take our seat! It's hard to get all that excited about Dennis Quaid.

Silly and low, that is. :-( That's NOT entertainment!

The irony is that our desperation clapping, cheering, smiling etc was filmed whilst the host and sidekick availed themselves of the opportunity to quaff gin vodka coffee and the contestants were left lurking on the stage like so many spare corpses at a funeral.

I think the only genuine applause received from those other than the 'older fans' was the Thank God That's Over clap at the very end!

That sounds more like a day at the office to me, not like a fun day with a game show. ;-)

Ah, but the similarities can sometimes be uncanny. 8-) And I often feel like applauding from relief when the day is over. Reality TV, indeed. Sorry, I ramble...

It really defies explanation how they manage to market a show called Pointless. I can just imagine the pitch: "It's called Pointless, because it's pointless! It's a perverse Family Fortunes with harder questionsit and only appeals to geriatrics, because they can't see or hear by that time! Well? Whaddaya think?"

Lol - your pitch sums it up perfectly! Even the dvd recorder refused to record it - a machine has got more discernment than a certain senior swathe of the population ;)

I kept meaning to set it up again, just out of curiosity, but then realised that I actually can't be arsed...!

BTW glad you posted Guy's dream of doom! It's a great piece and I was really flattered that you used a couple of my witterings in it.They nestle amongst so much more superior stuff, but thank you muchly!!

Never question the taste of the DVD recorder! It knows things. Unless, of course, it refuses to record something with RA in it. Then you need to get a new recorder.

And I'm happy you contributed! "Superior" - heh, that's what I thought about everybody stuff. It was really great getting to collaborate with everyone. Such an imaginative group!
