I have a feeling they did actually film the death of Hollis Mason, and it got cut for time or gore or something. I'm *sure* I saw an interview somewhere with one fo the people involved, possibly even Snyder, who said that the death of Hollis Mason was the most gruesome and disturbing scene they'd ever filmed. Maybe it'll be in the extended scenes on the special edition DVD.
A quick google confirms this - cut for time under sufferance, as there were a few other scenes that it leant on as well that could also go. And yes, as suspected, the DVD is going to be something pretty special, as it contains these scenes and more.
I expect we'll see a Director's Cut released. Snyder's original final edit, before the studio demanded changes, was 3 hours and 10 minutes.
I'm not sure it would actually be a better film, per se... or at least, I'm not sure that I'd want to sit through it in the cinema, given how gruelling the film was even in it's shortened form, but I'd dearly like to own it on DVD, in addition to the theatrical release. I strongly suspect that both versions will have their merits.
