The reality, though, is that "internships" (though I didn't realize that underpaid coffee-making jobs count as impressive in the circles you're talking about) are invaluable, especially with this generation of kids who think building resumes can somehow help them when they leave college (whether or not this is true).
That said, R&R is also invaluable, and internships count for only so much - and you should not feel like you have to answer to anyone about your summer plans, and the work/life experience you do or do not have.
I also think that's a question people ask to make conversation when the weather turns hot, and as the last couple of days have been liberally peppered with people we haven't seen in a while, "What are you doing this summer?" was basically inevitable.
Enjoy your summer, Rachel. Collect some seashells for me.
No, I'm serious. I'm not saying you should rebel, that you shouldn't do things specificallu because people think you should - I'm saying you shouldn't do things just because people expect them of you.
You are a cool, special, interesting person in your own right. You don't have to satisfy anyone but yourself. Make your own path. Don't be everything to everyone - be everything you want to be to yourself, and the people who really care about you will not just be satisfied with it - they'll be thrilled with it.
You can cut loose. You can fly free. I know you can.
amen sister. b/c i can tell you with all grinning assurance that nothing, NOTHING! beats sitting on your ass, and if that's what you do/did/plan on doing...i'll drink to that, and invite you to my beach party! :-p
Hey, I'm a friend of Charlotte's...I clicked around on her blog and encountered your site (my name's Jessica, by the way). I graduated Stern in January, and I totally understand what you're talking about. It used to annoy the heck out of me too...we had a pre-health advisor named Dr. Bosworth who told me that no, the whole world does not fill up every second of their time doing demanding things. Some people thrive on that kind of thing, and it pays off for them later when their lives are in order. But just because you don't attack your future all at once doesn't mean that it won't be wonderful when it comes
