Catching up is hard to do

I spent some time today catching up with someone who I went to primary and intermediate school with. Neither of us fit in especially well, and in a time of "boys will be boys, they get into fights" we both paid a heavy price for that ( Read more... )

People have the oddest of impacts on each other, and often, it seems, at times well before they're even faintly aware of the possibility.

In this case I was aware of the possibility. There were times when I chose to distract the attention of some of our more violent classmates, even when I knew it meant being on the receiving end of it. I don't know if it was brave - it certainly wasn't every time - but I really didn't like seeing other people suffer.

That was always an unspoken thing, though. And having someone acknowledge that to me for the first time, even decades later? I still don't know how to articulate how that makes me feel. It's a lot of things all at once.

Studies into workforce motivation have shown, far surpassing various monetary rewards, a simple thank you for one's efforts is a much more effective way to boost and maintain morale.
