The Boston Accent

I realized why it is so hard to perfect the Boston accent for many actors. It seems that people think that the whole dropping of the "R" thing makes the "R" unimportant in the language. They think that "Car" is easily translated into Boston by writing "Cah", but this is not in fact the case at all. It seems that the "R" is translated to a half- ( Read more... )

my other issue with actors who get it wrong is that they think EVERYONE from EVERY PLACE in massachusetts speaks with the same over the top accent allllll the time and never uses an R, ever.

there are tons of people here who are transplants, college kids, or from entirely different countries. and even people with accents only have them come off that strongly when they're angry, super excited, or drunk. and maybe a few select words.

the fighter did an excellent job with the accents, imo, and there are others as well, but a bunch of them make it seem like if you came here for a day you'd want to stuff an icepick in your ear.

Agree... though 30 Rock's Jack Donaghy character is a decent representation of a Masshole changing accent. He does an OK Boston but he switches into it every now and again in the series.

i love 30 rock...forever and ever amen.

i also hate netflix, for STILL not carrying season 5 for some reason and making me wait all the while the dvr is recording new episodes i can't watch yet. i think i'm having withdrawals from one of the only funny things on television.

I have a thick Dorchestah-ah accent. I love to laugh at hollywood attempting the local accents. I think the fighter had good accents because Mark Wahlberg was on set. It takes a Bostonian to know how to get it right. On the same note has anyone else noticed the Aflecks seem to have lost their accents? And that they come on too thick with it when they are portaying a Bostonian now? I noticed it most watching "The Town".
