Been a frustrating weekend... And day.

Worked from 11am to 9am. Almost 24 hours straight. Alot of that time on sequential. So, I do that and go to class and we have a few guests, including David Mack (aka the creator of Kabuki and Dare Devil), who was awesome.

Barron had David Critique our comic pages, with which I got no sleep while doing. So, he ( Read more... )

David Thornton from davidmackguide.com just forwarded a link to me of this.

I remember exactly who you are because I remember talking about the color on your pages- kind of sepia toned color, and I remember Barron asking you if that was done of photoshop. And later you asking to look at your work right before Barron took us on a tour of the college and then Ted took over.

First, it was a delight to speak in your class and see everyone's individual art approaches. All the students were great to me as well as Barron.
And sorry you were frustrated that we didn't get a more lengthy critique on yours.

I did enjoy the tones you painted, and the layout seemed to work on it well too.
I don't remember if I got the info on what yours was about in order to comment more.
But feel welcome to let me know.

Best to you!

Talk about the internet is watching! Haha

Anyways, thank you for speaking to the class, I did learn alot from it.

I was honoured as well that mine was the first to catch your eye; I was just eager to hear some suggestions on how the overall composition and panels could be improved. The comic itself, is a representation of the Zombie Survival Guide. The book itself isn't narrative, so it's a scenario that could take place within the guidelines that the book sets.

If you ever have time, I would love to keep in touch as the assignment progresses and perhaps get some feedback later on down the road. If it's cool with you, just shoot me an email or something at caffeinequeen at gmail dot com (gotta be careful of those email collection bots ). If not, that's cool, I completely understand that you're a busy guy. Regardless, have a great one and thanks again for coming by.

Thanks :)

Sorry for the repeat posts, there seems to be some kind of glitch in my computer each time I tried to go back to your page, my post would repeat.

Oh yeah I remember you mentioning it as the survival guide. That makes sense with the grid type panel layout you used. A six panel grid or a simialr grid would work good for a no- nonsense, non-narrative, guide approach.

It contrasted well against the other approaches that had narratives.

Probably the main thing would be to see how you balance those visuals with the text of the guide.

Maybe a regular kind of type used for it? like TImes or Courier instead of a hand made lettering?

Thanks :D

Yea, I'm using a fairly straight forward text ( I believe it is Times), so that it doesn't end up detracting from the aesthetics of a Guide.

One thing that I did notice, when I shrunk the piece down that it faded together; so I darkened most of the dark areas to near or total black. (Although, all the fine arts training i've had keeps screaming "don't use black with colour!" )

Despite it being a guide, there is a small story outside the survival narrative, so i've found it hard to balance the two in a "if you follow this subtype in his/her actions, you'll survive, but if you follow subtype 2 you'll get eaten " way.

Here are some links in the case that you wanted to get another view.
