I wonder where on the feasible/impracticable/pointless/worthwhile axis the point would lie that would correspond to constructing some sort of portable wordprocessing gizmo out of spare parts/kids toys etc ( Read more... )

It does, but the bill doesn't fit my wallet OH HO HO. I'm not working atm so I can't really chuck around even that kind of modest outlay, tho as soon as I get some money coming in I'm totally there.

Have you considered either an Eee or an XO?

Yes, they're both laptops. Yes, they're internet-enabled. But they are both extremely light and battery modest, and have the added bonus of being excessively cute. (; Also, you can feel darn good about buying an XO, as you buy one and donate one to a child in a developing country at the same time.

The Eee is lovely. So named for the noise you make when you see it.

Those are great, and I know that 300 bucks is beans for a nice new lappy. It's just that I'm more in the 20 quid and a roll od duct tape bracket atm...

You might find one of these: http://www.alphasmart.com/Retail/ on ebay, maybe.

Otherwise, I've got a palm lifedrive that I don't use, I'd be happy to send it to you (but you'd need to find a palm keyboard to make it useful as a word-processor).

Ooh, that's very kind of you! But really, don't go to the trouble. Making things is half the fun.

I like those writing widgets. I had something like them once--an Amstrad Notepad*, which I used for years before it finally conked out.

*Stop laughing, you lot. It was a long time ago!

it's true, making things is pretty awesome.
if you run out of making-things spoons, though, let me know. It's currently sitting on my chest of drawers and hasn't been powered up for about a year, so it's not doing anyone any good right now.
