In this book I read recently, A Dance With Dragons, it's very cold and snowy, and all the Southron lords ride big destriers and they all die in the cold; but the smart Northmen ride small shaggy garrons with snow shoes on and they do just fine (until they die in the cold too. Everybody dies alone in the cold, Mordicai). And your horses look like the shaggy garron type!
