It occurs to me that some of my favorite sessions to run have been rescues - of the sort described here - infiltrate a known or knowable position with a human objective. Noted - I'll work up one of these for another session I think - a good plan.
They're fun to play in too - but I think my experience with them as a player is confined to Shadowrun's 'extraction' missions.
It's interesting because they're represented oftener in a CRPG - and usually as a so called escort mission - which is never much fun.
A thing to really remember.
Also the OPness of Spirit Guardians never stops pleasing me. Team Cleric FTW
They work for DMs too; you just build a clockwork box & then let the PCs try to break it. Is this fundamentally the same as a "prison escape" session, except you have all your stuff?
I also generally like Escort missions in games...but I generally like levels with Objectives. & also am a fan of ICO/Shadow of the Colossus, which have an escort component cooked into core functionality.
M says: "The Cleric can cast purify food and drink and that's all!"
Games built around an escort mechanic are kind of their own thing -but when they come up in a game where it's not built around the mechanic it gets frustrating - "Oh, you got lost again & can't find the doorway, oh you got shot to hell, awesome."

In the game you describe, I'm more fundamentally bothered by the fact that the play controls are so poor that I can get lost & not find the doorway!
