Hey, my father has one of those too. In his case it's because he's actually missing a sheath of muscle in his intestinal wall, whee! The hernia itself never caused much trouble until his intestines started sticking together like cold spaghetti and two feet of them had to be removed. Oddly, the hernia is not implicated in the intestinal strangulation, but the surgery to repair the strangulation aggravated the hernia, which now makes it look as if my father has a homunculus trying to push its way out through his stomach, and it's all purple and stuff. Whee! I told him that for Halloween he should just walk around with no shirt on, but he did not do this. Anyway, now for Thanksgiving he has to get cut open along the same incision that just healed up from when he got cut open a few months ago, so a kind of mesh can be inserted into his gut to replace the muscle he doesn't have and, one hopes, prevent his guts from falling out the way they have been doing of late. This holiday season, he'll be thankful for morphine

They put a similar mesh in my stomach to patch the hole in my muscle. I hope your Dad's recovery is quick or, failing that, filled with morphine. My doctor did not mention any danger of strangulated intestines due to scarring, but he stressed that my hernia was small, and that I had fewer risks that other patients with more severe issues.
