“Wot’s dis?”
Bill studies the glittery string. “A ...” He scratches his head under his helmet. “Dunno,” he confesses, straightening his shield.
Bert sniffs it. “Et it, y’think?”
Bill rubs the side of his nose. “Nah,” he determines after a few moments’ thought. “It’d b’stringy.”
Bert nods and is about to drop it when a voice emerges from the shadows, followed promptly by its owner. “It’s a decoration,” the bearded man explains, the twinkle in his eye not hidden by his half-moon glasses.
“F’ippary.” Bert drops it.
“It’s for your party,” the old man furthers.
“Wot?”
Bert stands straight; protestingly, his back creaks. “Party?”
“With decorations and food.”
“Why dinnae y’say dat in de first place?” Bert nudges Bill. “Think Winnie’ll come?”
“M’eye’s on Rosie,” Bill grins.
The old man picks up the fallen tinsel and lays it over Bill’s helmet before walking away, leaving them to their conversation.
